The win means Worthing will have a home tie in the next round of the Trophy as they face Team Northumbria, whereas Reading will face a tough away fixture against the Lancashire Spinners.

James Cambronne capped a good weekend by leading Thunder with 25 points and Tom Ward adding 15 as they led for large chunks against a Reading side, heavily tipped to be contending for titles this season.

Head coach Daniel Hildreth was pleased with the character his side showed and said: “Again, it was another test of character in the fourth quarter that was required, and we came up with the goods.

“I’m so pleased with the efforts of all the guys this weekend – a true team who want to win for each other.”

Thunder, led by Ward and Cambronne started strongly and raced out to 20-13 lead after the first, but the hosts replied to lead by as many as seven in the second.

Despite the mini blip, Worthing came back and the sides could not be separated at the half, with both sides tied at 31-31.

Reading executed well at the start of the third and held a 48-41 lead with 4:08 left but Thunder finished the quarter on a 10-2 to hold a slim 51-50 lead, heading into the final period.

Worthing had more fight and determination in them, and in a relatively-close encounter, edged out their Berkshire rivals.
