Worthing RFC captain James Arthur’s weekly column (November 11)

WE welcomed Lydney to the Rugby Ground on Saturday and, after the disappointment of last weekend’s loss, it was important for us to regain the winning ways.

The side saw a few changes this week with both Rob and Charlie coming back, Matt starting at hooker and Jack Maslen replacing Joe on the wing.

We also welcomed back Dave Davis to the first-team squad after a lengthy absence

To use an old cliché, this was a game of two halves.

We came out of the blocks flying in the first half and scored straight from the kick-off. This was followed up by three more first-half tries, resulting in a bonus point.

The rugby we were playing was some of the best so far this season. We were free flowing and dangerous in attack, keeping the ball alive and making good decisions, that meant we kept Lydney under pressure.

Our scrum was effective and the forwards were producing quick balls for the backs to run with.

There was a positive feel about the second half and we really felt we could push on from the good start, unfortunately this did not happen.

A combination of our own mistakes, poor discipline and a good opposition coming back into the game, made the second half a very tense affair for all those involved.

To be fair, we did dog it out well and managed to hold on at the end.

But the game should never have got to that point, and why it did will be something that we will look at and work hard to improve on this week.

The other results this week will have raised a few eyebrows. There were big wins for Jersey, Ealing and Old Albanians and also wins for Canterbury, Dings, Clifton and Richmond.

This week we face a tough test against Richmond – a team whom we have had some memorable encounters with over the years and I am sure this will be no different.

For all those who are planning to come and support, it is a 4pm kick off at the Richmond Athletic ground and we would appreciate as much support as possible

A final word has to go to congratulate all those who were involved in the organisation, planning and running, of the highly successful fireworks event that was held at the club on Friday evening.

I’m sure it was enjoyed by all of the 3,000 people who attended.
