Worthing RFC captain James Arthur’s weekly column (April 22)

Even though they have had their relegation confirmed for a few weeks now, we were still not taking this game lightly, knowing that they would still be dangerous if we played a loose style of rugby or went into the game with the wrong attitude.

We did use this fixture to “blood” a few younger players and to try a few different things. So, with that in mind, the side saw a few changes in the forwards, Pete Cleveland started at hooker, Finley Coxon-Smith started in the second row, Sam Hewick was at open side and Rob Smith started at 8.

In the backs, Shane Costigan was at scrum-half, Joe Govett was at 10 and there was a first cap for the younger Redmayne brother, Matt, on the wing.

The game itself went as expected. We scored in the first few minutes and continued freely from there, with a number of players getting on the score sheet, including the debutant Matt, who went over in the last play of the match.

Credit must go to the young Newbury side that have had a tough season, but they never gave up or let their heads drop in this fixture.

So, to this week and we face a tougher test in the form of Clifton, in what is our last home game of the season.

We came away with a defeat when we played them in December, being on the wrong end of a 10-9 scoreline in what was a scrappy game, and we hope to continue the good form we have been showing recently.

As this is our last home game of the season, the whole squad would like to thank all of the ground staff, bar and kitchen staff and the volunteers who work tirelessly on match days.

Also, a big thank-you must go the medical team, who work overtime getting and keeping the boys on the pitch, I’m sure they are looking forward to some well-earned time off.

Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude to all the coaches and managers, who probably have the toughest job of all, trying to organise us and making sure we have everything we may need.

A big thank-you has to go to Will Green, who is leaving us at the end of the season to move down to Somerset with his family.

Will has done a fantastic job as head coach for the past two seasons and is a large part of the success we have had.

He will be sorely missed, but we wish him and his family all the best in the future. We hope to see him in the bar whenever he gets the chance.

Lastly, a thank-you from the whole squad to all of the supporters, family and friends, girlfriends and wives, who turn up week in, week out, come rain or shine, to watch us play.
