Worthing members pick up medal haul

FOR a club that has only been running a year and a half, Worthing Judo Club picked up a good haul of medals at the JFA UK British Judo National Championships.

The team travelled to London earlier this month and Ross Elliott, a 1st kyu, took gold in the 100kg-plus event in the kyu grades and then went on to take bronze in the dan grade pool as he beat some 2nd dans along the way. He has now been promoted to 1st dan black belt, subject to kata.

Savio Aragona claimed gold in the 75kg-plus kyu grade and Chris Cooper picked up bronze in the over-80kg kyu grade.

Lee Pannett just missed out on a medal as did Phil Arnott, who pulled out with a cracked rib.

Three junior fighters from Worthing were also in action and George Gould took gold in the 55kg category.

Josh Cooper fought well to win bronze in the 75kg category as he won four fights.

Harvey McDanogh also won bronze, in the 60kg-plus category, as he fought well, having joined the club only a month ago.

Worthing Judo Club was opened just over a year ago by Sensei Chris Cooper, a 4th dan former Welsh and British international and a former Sussex, south of England and national multi-champion.

Cooper said he was proud of all the club members that fought in the competition in London and thanked all the coaches who travelled up –Sensei Bob Elliott 4th dan, Steve Paine 1st dan and Mick Craker 1st kyu.

The club train using traditional Kodokan Judo rules, under the governing body Judo for All UK and the World Judo Federation. The club’s president is Sensei Sampson Sampson 8th dan.

Cooper said: “We are here to train, not make money, so there are no hidden contracts.
