Worthing are hoping to challenge for promotion into the Championship leagues this year but Guernsey started the game strongly and went ahead in the first minute with a converted try.

The visitors quickly hit back and Jaimie Justice went over. Lauren Sandford’s conversion levelled the score at 7-7, before end-to-end rugby ensued and both sides scored again before half-time, with only a conversion putting newly-promoted Guernsey 14-12 ahead at the break.

In an even second half, Worthing went 17-14 ahead through Jess Lovenbury’s try.

However, Guernsey were not done and started to put the Worthing defence under more pressure, which held well until the last minute when the Guernsey forwards powered over to put them back in the lead at 19-17.

Worthing have high aspirations this season and despite being exhausted, a rallying cry was made by skipper Jo Wakeford. The game restarted and Worthing pushed Guernsey back.

A relentless attack paid off and after a knock-on, a scrum was awarded to Worthing 12 metres out and became the last play of the game. Holly Blackhurst picked up from the back of the scrum and attacked down the blind side. The Worthing forward, with a final surge of grit and strength, kept the ball alive with multiple phases of attack, and finally Justice crashed over for her second try and the winner. Another conversion from Sandford made the final score to 24-19.

Worthing ladies head coach Andy Duckworth said: “To travel overseas and win is hard enough, but to pick yourself up with a minute to go and snatch the victory back shows the dedication and belief this team has in itself.”

Worthing host Lewes in their next game on September 27.

Worthing ladies are running a second development team and are keen to hear from potential new players, with no experience necessary. Visit www.worthingrfc.com to get in touch.
