Vincent stars in Belgium judo events

Vincent, who took part in the senior 100kg category, followed up his first place in the Southern and Northern area judo competitions.

The Angmering man was part of the Belgium Club J C Kawaishi team for the challenge.

It was a tricky road to the title for Vincent but he came past each individual. The Angmering star saw off former Belgian national medallist Karel De Splentere in his first fight.

Vincent then beat Jonas Himpe with a standing strangle and Bjorn Gobeyn with an ippon throw.

That set up a final showdown with third dan Pieter Devos.

Devos took an early lead with a yuko throw, which Vincent equalised shortly afterwards before a stranglehold saw him take gold.

Vincent was pleased to pick up another top medal and said: “I knew De Splentere would be a tough fight having lost to him in a competition earlier this year but it was good to avenge my defeat.

“He is a strong defensive fighter and is difficult to throw, so I am pleased with the win.”

Vincent was then back in action just a few days later in the Flemish VJF Championships.

He continued his fine form and finished with a bronze medal.

Speaking of his third-placed finish, Vincent said: “It was an honour for me to represent my club J C Kawaishi and the province of West Flanders.

“For me to win a bronze medal was a great achievement.

“I was disappointed not to beat Sander Boelaert in the semi-final but I may meet him in the next competition.

“The competition will be even harder in the nationals as Toma Nikiforov, who recently won a medal in the World Championship, will be competing but it is great to be competing at this level.”
