Thunder had won 75-72 at home to Newham Neptunes on Saturday for their fourth successive win but the 77-71 reverse to Medway Park means Thunder now have to win their final four games and also rely on several results going their way.

Worthing sit tenth in the EBL Division 1 table with 16 points. Eighth-placed Bristol are one of three teams on 22 points, along with Leeds Carnegie and Newham, and all three have won this season’s head-to-head record with Thunder.

Even if Worthing win their remaining four games, Leeds and Newham would need just one win each from their respective seven remaining games to finish ahead of Thunder, Bristol would need one from five, and fifth-placed Manchester would need one win from seven matches.

Thunder coach Daniel Hildreth said: “We have to win every single game now, as we’ve said for a while now. We’re definitely in the hands of the basketball gods to hope that the remaining teams above us have a real slump to finish the season.”
