Steyning reach the final

STEYNING Town Football Club reached the Division 2 Cup final with a goal in each half to defeat local-rivals Lancing on Thursday. Steve Duffett headed home the opener 12 minutes before half-time and Paul Schofield made the game safe three minutes from time.

In an entertaining game, Lancing could have gone ahead after just six minutes. The lightning quick Marcus Strevens robbed Tom Pickford of the ball before racing towards Town's goal. He hesitated a fraction too long before getting his shot away and was brilliantly tackled by Pickford.

Steyning started to come more into the game as an attacking force after a nervy opening and Greg Hearne had two efforts which fizzed just over.

After a spate of bookings by referee Adrian Hudson, who yellow-carded seven players in total, midway through the first half, Town went ahead on 33 minutes.

Simon Price's free kick from the left touchline came off a Lancing head before Steve Duffett headed past Lancing keeper Steve Allfrey from six yards.

Steyning then had chances to double their lead before half-time. Chris Duffett fired into the side-netting and Lee Waterhouse just failed to get enough contact on James Davis' cross.

Two minutes before half-time, Lancers should have levelled but Strevens was again denied by Pickford. A long ball from the Lancing defence left Strevens one-on-one with Town keeper Dave Angell. Stevens' lob was goalbound until Pickford, somehow, cleared the ball just before it crossed the line.

Hearne headed over a 2-0 chance from Gareth Dutton's corner early in the second period before Lancing almost equalised twice inside a minute.

The lively Chris Osbourne's 25-yarder took a wicked bounce and Angell parried the ball to safety, before Strevens' 15-yard curling effort was again stopped by the Steyning keeper. Those opportunities were Lancers' last clear chances to grab an equaliser.

Town had a penalty appeal waved away on the hour-mark when Waterhouse went down under a Mark Harris challenge.

And, with Lancing pressing more and more men forward in search of an equaliser, Steyning sealed their place in the final on 87 minutes. Chris Duffett's corner was missed by Hearne at the near post but Paul Schofield dived in to head the clincher from six yards.

There was still time for Osbourne to hit the Steyning bar from a corner, but even if that had gone in, it would have been too little, too late.
