In what was the first year of the competition, Redmayne’s effort against Dorking was voted as the best of the campaign.

The try, which was entered into the competiton by Raiders’ Matt Farnes, was a stunning team effort and was rounded off by the back-row.

After scrum-half Calum Waters had sparked the attack from deep, Worthing’s backs and forwards combined superbly to confound the Dorking defence.

Eventually Redmayne hit a devastating line off the final offload, outstripping one would-be tackler before stepping past another to dot down.

Redmayne feels it is the team who should take credit for the try and said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic to receive this award.

“Obviously, the accolade goes to me but the team deserve huge credit as well.

“It was a move which spanned the length of the pitch and I had the shortest distance to go with the ball.

“I’m a teacher and I think all of my pupils’ parents were voting, so that would have helped with the final count.

“Those are the sort of tries teams dream of, with everyone involved and it going all the way from one end of the pitch to the other.

“At Raiders, we score quite a few of those tries and we will be looking to repeat that again next season.”

Raiders finished last season fifth in National 2 South, after they had been relegated from National 1 the previous year.

Raiders got the double over champions Henley Hawks last season and also beat Bishop’s Stortford, who finished second, at home.

However, Worthing suffered a home reverse to Dings, who finished bottom, so Redmayne is hoping his side can be more consistent this season.

He said: “I felt consistency let us down last season and cost us a higher finish.

“We actually beat the top two teams and had some real confidence at the halfway point in the year.

“However, we ended up losing to bottom of the league at home. That, along with other poor results, really cost us, if I’m honest.

“We are now back in training with the first pre-season games just a couple of weeks’ away and everyone is excited.”

Redmayne had originally won the December try of the month award, which meant Raiders were rewarded with £1,000 worth of Samsung products.
