Rower James completes family double with race win

Gumbrell-Tilley, 20, was part of the junior men’s four team who won the Shoreham Regatta trophy this year.

The remarkable feat was made all the more astonishing as the youngster’s late grandfather, Brian Gumbrell, took top honours in the same event back in 1959.

Since joining Shoreham at the age of 13, Gumbrell-Tilley has always wanted to emulate what his grandfather had achieved, which he has now succeeded in doing.

The rowing talent is the third generation from the family to be part of Shoreham’s set-up and trains with his crew every evening.

His grandfather passed away in 2003, long before he had taken up the sport, but Brian would have been proud to have seen his grandson win the same trophy he collected all those years ago.

The Shoreham Regatta win continued an impressive year for Gumbrell-Tilley, who recently returned from a coaching stint at Melbourne High School.
