The event, which takes place on New Year’s Day each year, had 504 runners complete the opening race of the WSFRL season.

Runners braved the muddy and damp conditions, with Crawley Athletics Club’s Paul Navesey first home in 30min 26sec.

Portslade Hedgehoppers’ Patrick Roddy was close behind as he finished just eight seconds behind Navesey.

Chichester’s James Baker was third in 31-03.

The women’s race was won by Crawley’s Martha Coyle in 35-14. Worthing Harriers took the other two podium places, with Sarah Kingston second in 35-23 and Louisa Mant third in 37-14.

Event organiser Dave Harris was delighted with the turnout and said: “It was a great day for all involved.

“We were not expecting that many competitors but in the end we had runners from Yorkshire, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire, as well as Sussex.

“We were quite fortunate that the rain held off for the race but the course was still very muddy.

“A number of races last season had record numbers turn out, so it was pleasing to continue that trend in the first race of 2016.

“I would also like to thank Worthing College for allowing us to use their car park for the race. Without use of their car park, it would be tricky to get the race on.”

Worthing Harriers are the next club to host a WSFRL race, with the Worthing Lido four-mile event on January 31.
