Record-breaking fifth billiards title for Kevin

Worthing-based Kevin Tunstall recently became a record-breaking five-time world bar billiards champion.

Tunstall, who plays for The White Hart, in Littlehampton, says it is “fantastic” to break the record after his latest success in Jersey, where he retained the title he had also won last year.

In the World Championships, he defeated previous world champion Dennis Helluar and Bob King to reach the final.

He then faced Berkshire’s Paul Sainsbury in the final and elected to put Sainsbury in on the first break and he duly set a 15,440 break.

Tunstall broke in the second game with 17,620 to win his fifth world championship and retain the title.

Tunstall had previously defended the title 18 years ago, in 1994, before repeating the success this year. He has also finished runner-up on three occasions, in 1987, 2001 and 2008.

Tunstall said: “It was a fantastic win and another chapter in my career, it is the first time anyone has won the title five times.

“It is extra special to defend the title, it is a hard title to win and it is really special.

“I am going to try to defend the title for a third time now. I have been playing for a long time and all the time I am enjoying it, I will keep trying to break records.”

He went on to explain his craving to become the first person to defend the title for three years on the bounce.

He said: “I want to be the first to defend the title for a third time but it is a hard championship to win. I will work hard, keep aiming for records and keep playing until I stop enjoying it.”

He also won the All England Grand Prix of the country’s top 16 players last month.
