Raiders suffer heavy home defeat

It was the Raiders first home defeat in six matches and the loss now leaves them fifth in the table.

The game began well for the home side as tries from Alex Nielsen and Stan South had given Worthing a 14-0 lead inside 15 minutes.

Cambridge registered their first points in the contest thanks to a Benjamin Penfold penalty on 22 minutes.

Stephen Hipwell then secured his side’s opening try a minute before the interval to make it 14-10.

The second-half proved to be a one-sided affair with Cambridge running in 33 points to the Raiders’ five.

Worthing were quick out of the blocks and a well worked try which saw Kieran Leeming, James Redmayne and Matt McLean all involved, before Iain Greenwood went over and made it 19-10.

That was to be as good as it got for the home side, though, as two tries from Jim Wigglesworth, before touched downs from Hipwell and James Stokes sent Raiders to defeat.

Worthing travel to Dings Crusaders in two weeks time.
