Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club hosted the first event of its kind and Hove-based Scott Edwards lifted the title and the £1,500 prize money as he overcame Pavilion’s Gavin Bevan in the final.

More than 90 bowlers took part in the competition and Pavilion plan to hold the event over the May bank holiday weekend again next year, before hosting the 2015 end-of-season finale in September.

Planetbowls has proved a popular indoor concept in recent years for bowlers and the company is now looking to expand to run an outdoor circuit from next year.

Planetbowls director Stephen Roberts said: “When it’s your first outdoor competition, you’re a little bit unsure how it’s going to work compared to the indoor ones.

“Luckily, it’s worked just as well as some of the other competitions which have been running for two or three years, so it’s been awesome.

“The guys who are at the club set everything up, rolled up and marked the games and it’s run perfectly. The weather was awesome, with the sun shining. It’s been brilliant.

“It’s a stepping stone to the next one. We’ll come back here next year and we’ll be looking to bring the grand final back here in September next year. We’ve just got to build the circuit now.”
