Despite the challenges of Covid-19 and three nationwide lockdowns, the development of the new clubhouse in Shoreham continued throughout 2020. With the interior now complete the club is preparing to welcome back its members and the community of Shoreham.

The club, formed in 1892, is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the UK. The old clubhouse, open since 1950, is to be demolished later this year to make way for flood defences that will be built along the riverside. The new building boasts modern facilities and the club has honoured its history with several features that nod to its important history in the town.

The new two-storey building will become an important asset to the community of Shoreham, with modern and fully accessible facilities and unrivalled views.

Wonderful views across the harbour are on offer

Kevin Headon, Commodore of Sussex Yacht Club, said: “The handover of our new building marks an important time for both the Sussex Yacht Club and the town of Shoreham. Not only is the development allowing for improved flood protection for our community, it is also enabling improved access for cyclists and pedestrians, and providing the best possible and fully accessible facilities for our current and new members alike.

“We believe the new clubhouse will become an important asset to the local community, whilst also honouring the history of the club that we are all so proud of. We hope this is a development that the people of Shoreham will be proud of and we are looking forward to welcoming members and the community in to see what we have on offer here.”

The club expects an increase in membership enquiries with watersports such as stand-up paddleboarding having seen a huge surge in popularity.

Headon added: “We are immensely proud of our new facilities and extend our gratitude to all of those who have been involved in the development, which allow us to go even further to provide full access for all. We look forward to welcoming members of all ages into our new home and out on the water for the exciting range of activities we have planned this year.”
