They set out to raise the roof – and raised more than £20,000. And players, coaches and supporters of Worthing Rugby Club can look back on their fundraising project with pride.

Many sections and teams from across the club got involved in the big push to run for funds which will pay for a new clubhouse roof – the under-15s boys alone covered 2,121 km and raised £3,185. As a whole, the club covered 11,779km and brought in £21,003.

Trish Barnes, the vice-chair of the club, said: “As a club and individually it turns out we all needed ‘Raise the Roof’! The past year has brought so many challenges; for the club that meant lost income, a lack of rugby and the ability to socialise together as a team. As individuals, moving into another lockdown during the midst of winter somehow it seemed harder to get motivated.

“The rugby club should be halfway through its centenary celebrations and a year’s worth of events and fundraising haven’t been able to happen. And a leaking 45-year-old clubhouse roof still needs replacing so a whole-club fundraiser seemed the perfect way to kick-start the project. I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud to be part of such an amazing team, from our under-fives right through to the senior and first team getting involved and smashing the targets set of them for both kilometres run and funds raised.

“The money raised is fantastic and a good way towards the new roof but for me the big winner was #oneclub, teamwork, camaraderie, healthy competition, support, friendship and health. There were individuals and families pushing themselves and running, jogging or walking and all feeling great for it and determined that it doesn’t end with Raise the Roof.”
