West Sussex sailors ready to make waves after government go-ahead

Sailing is predominantly enjoyed in the summer and clubs have had plans in place for a while, and their equipment is ready to go.

The fact competitors come into contact with only a small number of regulars that they know has allowed the Royal Yachting Association, working with the government, to establish it is a low-risk activity.

Dinghy sailing nationally remains popular on our lakes and rivers but in Hampshire and West Sussex sailing on the sea, or in one of the natural harbours offer the best locations. Many sailors will return to boats they have always sailed but some may feel now is time for change.

Day keelboat racing offers the attractions of dinghy sailing without the hard work of launching and recovering.

In Chichester Harbour one or two clubs offer racing for classes of classic day boats. Itchenor Sailing Club has three day racing keelboat classes.

The National Swallow, the Solent Sunbeam and the XOD class all thrive in the harbour, alongside dinghy and junior sailing at Itchenor.

With on-site accommodation a weekend or even a week’s stay is a great option to complement your sailing.

A huge programme of racing is organised at regular times each weekend from March to October including a week-long regatta in June.

The Swallow class have opportunities for newcomers. Crews are always welcome to join the fleet.
