With the Covid-19 pandemic having placed many restrictions on our regular activities, watersports have seen a huge surge in popularity in 2020.

More than ever before, people have enjoyed being on or near the coast this year, taking advantage of the benefits that outdoor activity has on our mental and physical health.

With the existing clubhouse set to be demolished to make way for flood defences, an impressive new two-storey building is due to be complete by the beginning of 2021, enabling even more people to have access to the activities available.

Membership is open to all and includes the use of facilities in the new clubhouse, which will continue to be home to Sussex Sailability, a charity that enables people with disabilities to sail.

The building has been specifically designed to allow sailors with disabilities to get the best possible experience.

Kevin Headon, commodore of Sussex Yacht Club, said: “This year’s restrictions have impacted on many aspects of our lives, but one positive result is that so many people have reconnected with our natural environment this year.

“It has been wonderful to see people of all ages and abilities using our county’s coastline in a variety of ways and I hope this increased love of the outdoors will continue. New members are the life-blood of our club and we are very much looking forward to sharing our new facilities with both our existing members, and those looking to join us in the new year.”

Whether you are new to sailing, or have a new year’s resolution to get back in the water, there are many benefits to joining the Sussex Yacht Club as a member, including taking part in sessions of the increasingly popular sport of stand up paddleboarding (SUP).

Despite the challenges caused by Covid-19, and two nationwide lockdowns, the building of Sussex Yacht Club’s new clubhouse has continued and facilities will be open in the new year.
