Fairway flashbacks

Two of the golfers from this photo wrote in to offer more information about what was going on in this 1976 picture.

David Alderson, fifth from left, and Martin Galway, to David’s left, think the photo was taken at a Sussex Colts (under-21) match at Worthing Golf Club.

David was, and still is, a member at West Sussex Golf Club and also represents Sussex Seniors.

Martin was also a member at West Sussex Golf Club in 1976, but now plays at Brighton & Hove Golf Club and represents England and Sussex Seniors.

Both confirmed that the man in the flat cap, to the right of the photo, is Commander Jimmy James, who was a member of West Sussex Golf Club and also secretary of Sussex County Golf at the time.

The man on the far left is Malcolm Ross, formerly of Nevill Golf Club.

Behind Malcolm is Phillip Scarfield, who used to be a member at West Sussex Golf Club. David said that Phillip now only plays golf “once in a blue moon”.

Next along is Colin Steele, a former member of West Hove Golf Club who now roams the fairways at Brighton & Hove Golf Club.

Behind Colin is Malcolm Hoad, who was at Seaford Blatchington Golf Club in 1976.

In front of Malcolm, in the all black, is Nick O’Byrne, formerly of West Hove Golf Club, and now a member at Moor Park Golf Club in Hertfordshire.

The man pictured in mid-swing is Mike King, a member at Nevill Golf Club.
