Murray's one of our greatest ever sportsmen

After the Iceland football debacle, Murray’s performances over the Wimbledon fortnight, with Lewis Hamilton’s British GP success and the Welsh football team, have gone a long way to restoring the UK’s sporting pride.

Much was made of how much money our England footballers earn, and how that had made them almost lose sight of why they play the sport. Murray destroys that theory, his career earnings and tournament winnings alone top $50 million without endorsements, which dwarfs anything almost all of Roy Hodgson’s squad ever earned.

It’s never been about the money and the fame with him, he’s focused and determined, for all her critics his mum has to take a lot of the credit for that.

I firmly believe there’s more to come, hopefully starting with him retaining his Olympic gold in Rio, then finally reaching that coveted world number one spot. Then when he does finally hang up his racket, he will rightly be deemed a true British sporting legend.

And just to show he’s human, he then ends up partying hard on Sunday, returning home dishevelled at 3am, as pictured in the tabloids.

Not that far away from the dentist’s chair in Hong Kong 20 years ago with one huge difference, he did it after he’d won!

n The current Mohammed Amir saga once again highlights hypocrisy in sport.

Granted as an 18-year-old he was involved in the spot fixing scandal, regardless of his age and any mitigating circumstances, he broke the law and was punished with a jail term and a ban from cricket.

That specified ban has now expired, so why all this furore about whether he should be allowed to play or not?

I wonder if the people making these noises paid to watch Mike Tyson on Sky after he got out of prison for rape?

Or then after he’d bitten Evander Holyfield’s ear off but came back for a world title fight against Lennox Lewis?

I wonder if the critics are the same people who bet on Lester Piggott ridden horses after he got out of prison for tax evasion? Or watched Tony Adams captain England after he got banged up for drinking and driving?

Amir made a mistake, don’t we all, was punished, and is now trying to get his life and career back on track, but don’t you just love our judgmental society?
