Leaders Raiders thrash Barking

Worthing Raiders Rugby Club put down nine tries as they thumped sorry Barking 61-0 at Roundstone Lane on Saturday (January 5).

It was top against bottom in National 2 South and that really showed in a one-sided affair which was watched by former Raiders, now England and Wasps, star, Joe Launchbury and Cornish Pirates’ Ryan Storer.

A first-half hat-trick from winger Jordan Burns, along with tries from Pete Cleveland and captain Matt Miles, as well as four conversions from Joe Govett, had the bonus point in the bag at half-time when Raiders led 33-0.

It was more of the same in the second half as Finlay Coxon-Smith, Jack Maslen, Chris Sewell and Harry Sloan all helped themselves to tries, while Govett took his conversion tally for the day to seven, before Matt Farnes slotted over the last kick.

The results keeps Raiders sitting pretty at the top of the pile, although one down point of the afternoon was a nasty-looking injury to Darren Clayton in the first half - believed to be a dislocated elbow, which stopped play for almost 10 minutes.
