It's penalty heartbreak for Mile Oak

MILE OAK Football Club exited the Brighton Charity Cup second round 5-3 on penalties to Ringmer after a 4-4 draw on Wednesday.

Oak led 3-1 after 50 minutes but Ringmer fought back to 3-3 and then missed a penalty to win the game in normal time.

Ringmer then went ahead in extra-time before Kieran Howard's tap-in from Titus Paterson's excellent cross forced spot-kicks.

Ringmer went first and scored all five through keeper Joe Adams, Andy Hart, Danny McLaughlin, Marc Whiteman and Luke Gedling.

Oak' scorers were Kieran Howard, Lee Howard and Scott Carden. Chris Pulling's penalty, Oak's third, was saved by Ringmer keeper Adams.

Danny Curd, from Paterson's flick, had fired Oak into an eighth-minute lead but Ringmer equalised 10 minutes later through Kieran Patel.

Oak then moved within 3-1 ahead within five minutes of the second half. Paterson headed home Wayne Whittington's flick-on from Darryl Livesey's long throw on 48 minutes.

Then Kieran Howard crossed for Whittington to net two minutes later.

Oak then had an excellent chance to move 4-1 ahead. Kieran Howard's free kick was saved by Adams, so too was Paterson's rebound, and Whittington then fired the second rebound against the bar from six yards.

Within 60 seconds, Ringmer had made it 3-2 through McLaughlin.

James Novis equalised five minutes later and Ringmer then had a golden chance to win the tie on 85 minutes.

Oak defender Nathan Loughlin was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area, but Whiteman's spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Oak keeper Aaron Stenning.

Extra-time followed, with a goal apiece, before Ringmer made no mistake with their next five penalties.

Oak manager Anthony Whittington said: "It was a really good end-to-end game of football.

"I was pleased with the way we played, especially as we made a few changes. But I was disappointed for the lads that they didn't go through.

"Titus Paterson was outstanding, and Kieran Howard and Darryl Livesey also played well. All the young lads did well against strong County One opposition.

"We had a good chance to go 4-1 up, but then we had chances to clear the ball before they made it 3-2.

"Then penalties are always a bit of a lottery."
