Harriers’ Edward throws pb and under-15s finish second

WORTHING Harriers Athletics Club’s 16-year-old Edward Pillai had an outstanding day at Woking’s Open Meeting.

He has been a Harrier since 2004 and threw his javelin to a personal best of 54.38m, which overtook the club’s under-17 men’s record of 53.24m, held by Keith Beard since 1978.

Pillai is coached at Harriers by Caroline Garratt.

In their final Sussex Under-15 League meeting of the year, Worthing finished second but just 5½ points separated the top four clubs.

Crawley won with 336 points, ahead of Harriers, who scored 333½. Brighton were third with 331½, one point ahead of Chichester.

Top spot changed frequently throughout the meeting, but Crawley prevailed after Harriers 4x300m relay team were disqualified, and Worthing were also unable to field any pole vaulters or male 1,500m runners.

Harriers produced numerous excellent individual performances and several of the club’s athletes feature in the current league records. Sophie Spinner holds three (one jointly), with Craig Dummer, Ellis Lockwood, Amelia Thompson (jointly) and the Worthing girls’ 4x100m team having one apiece.

Worthing also won their West Division contest in this league, by winning all three meetings, although were closely followed by Crawley on each occasion.
