YMCA end Lancing’s winning league run

Lancers had won their previous three league games but a first half hat-trick from YM’s Liam Hunter put paid to any hopes of leaving Gorings Mead with a result.

With last week’s Sussex Senior Cup hammering at Bognor, Lancers have now conceded 13 goals in their last two games.

Lancing assistant manager Tom Gurney admitted a poor performance in the first 45 cost them dearly and they were never able to recover on Saturday.

He said: “We didn’t get going in the first half at all and we paid the price in the end.

“Straight from the off, the whole team didn’t start well and at 3-0 down at half-time it was effectively all over.

“We were much better in the second half and we are hoping this is just a small blip.”

Hunter gave the hosts the lead after just three minutes, and he then added a second midway through the half after Lancing failed to deal with a set-piece.

It was to get worse for the visitors as Hunter grabbed his third on the stroke of half-time, which all but sealed the result at the break.

However, Lancers rallied in the second half and Jonno Melia struck the upright, but shortly afterwards Nick Sullivan scored Horsham’s fourth against the run of play.

Martin Smith also added his name to the scoresheet eight minutes from time to give the scoreline a resounding feel for the hosts.

Lancing will be looking to bounce back when they host Newhaven on Friday (7.45pm) and then travel to Hailsham on Tuesday.
