WSFL fear not finishing the season

THE West Sussex Football League are concerned that any more bad weather may mean they are unable to complete the season.

League secretary Chris Bridges has sent out an email to all clubs suggesting if many more games were lost there are serious doubts that all fixtures will be completed.

The WSFL was forced to cancel all cup competitions back in February in a hope to ease the backlog, but continued postponements due to the elements means that finishing the season may not be possible.

The league has highlighted the seriousness of the situation ahead of a bumper Easter weekend of fixtures.

Bridges said: “It’s been in the back on my mind for a while. Pretty much the whole of the last two Saturday’s fixtures were lost and it’s crucial this weekend.

“We have a full list of fixtures on Saturday and Monday so it’s fingers crossed at the moment for a couple of dry days.

“If it all goes pear-shaped this weekend we are in trouble.”

The league’s main problems surround clubs that must be off their pitch by a certain date, mainly due to pitch sharing with cricket sides.

Postponed games from March 16 and 23 are yet to be arranged and are all now likely to be evening matches.

This means teams in the higher divisions, which aren’t regionalised, also now face long trips across the county midweek with 6pm kick offs.

Bridges added: “We had to cancel the cup competitions, but we are just hoping now that the league fixtures do not fall by the wayside as well.
