After taking a third minute lead when Calum Thoms scored direct from a corner, United found themselves 3-1 down within 20 minutes, before a second from Thoms from the spot, on 29 minutes and an equaliser from Callum Wells three minutes later.

Albert Ellis struck on 51 minutes to put the Mavericks back in front, with Dan Hills giving the Maverick a two-goal cushion on 76.

The visitors, despite having a man sent off,, pulled one back with just under ten minutes left to set up an exciting finish for the crowd of 106, but Unittd held on.

A classic case of ‘handbags’ saw a second Greenways player red-carded after the final whistle.

Mavericks boss Danny Wood told the Herald: “We started the game really well, but we probably scored too early, took our foot off the pedal and found conceded three goals in 15 minutes. I thought maybe this was Littlehampton again, but fair play to the lads they didn’t give up, worked hard and we were soon back on level terms.

“I thought we’d score more the second half, I would have liked it to be a bit more plain sailing.

“That said, this week £6 for a nine-goal thriller, with our attacking style of football certain certainly gives the supporters value for money.”

United travel to Bexhill this Saturday in the SCFL.

Elsewhere in the Vase there were wins for Horsham YMCA, East Preston and Steyning.
