Worthing: Second null and void season won't stop us in our tracks

Worthing FC insist they will be more determined than ever to win promotion to the National League South – even if this season becomes the second in a row to be written off.

Chairman Barry Hunter said the club had used lockdown to make sure it was in a strong position once football was able to resume.

Work on the troublesome artificial pitch at Woodside Road is now complete and is being tested by FIFA officials today.

The club have also installed new floodlights and done other work around the ground – on fan segregatation and a dressing room – while putting a new off-field structure in place to ensure things can be run efficiently and sustainably.

Hunter said close to £500,000 had been spent, and stressed it had come from grants and last summer’s crowdfunding project. The latter raised £45,000 in a matter of weeks.

The chairman thanked all those who got involved, and praised the Football Foundation and the FA for their help in securing grants.

Asked if a second round of seeing the season’s results being written off would see some of the club’s will to succeed start to wilt, Hunter said: “We would come back harder.

“Hinsh (Adam Hinshelwood) is very competitive and focused and that will manifest itself in the team we see on the park,” he said.

“Off the park we are showing how we are getting things in place to push on. George Dowell (owner) put a substantial investment in place and now it’s all about building on it and making sure we are fully sustainable.”
