He is backing the view of clubs around the country that results from last season and this term should be used to promote sides that have shown over two unfinished seasons they deserve it.

Hinshelwood is well aware people will say ‘he would say that, wouldn’t he?’ with Worthing one of the clubs that would go up under the Project Non-League proposal, which has been put to the FA as part of a survey of clubs over what to do if the 2020-21 can’t restart in time to be played to a finish.

Many are sceptical about whether the FA will go for such a radical idea – having decided to null and void the 2019-20 season after much of it had been played – but Hinshelwood said it was the perfect opportunity for the FA to reward success and press on with their long-held plans to reorganise the non-league structure.

Project Non-League does not suggest any teams being relegated.

We reported last week how Worthing chairman Barry Hunter was backing the two-seasons-in-one plan.

Hinshelwood said: “If the FA want to reorganise the leagues, this would be the best way for it to go ahead.

“Obviously, we would say this as a club, but not even the most die-hard of other teams’ fans would disagree about its fairness. I think a lot of teams who wouldn’t benefit from it through promotion would also say they wouldn’t oppose it.”

Hinshelwood said clubs themselves weren’t the only consideration – fans and sponsors should be considered for the money, time and effort they had put in to backing teams.

“Our fans were turning up in big numbers when they could and spending a lot of money and at the moment it feels like that has been wasted,” he added.

The manager echoed the chairman’s determination that even if Worthing were denied promotion to National League South this year, they would remain committed to getting the job done.

“We’re planning as a club to be in National South and although there’s still a lot of hard work ahead, nothing will stop us from that course.”
