Around 30 players attended the first training session allowed since before the latest lockdown and manager Adam Hinshelwood was delighted by the turnout and by what he saw.

“The intensity was crazy,” he said after Tuesday night’s session. “They were coming back to a new pitch and new facilities ad everyone worked really hard and put a lot of effort in.”

Fitness and ball work was included and the session ended with small-sided matches – and Hinshelwood said he was ‘pleasantly surprised’ at how fit the players had kept themselves.

He said of the pitch: “The lads were amazed by how different a 3G pitch can be. It’s such a higher-level spec from one that was quite bumpy.”

Worthing are bucking the trend locally – very few clubs who don’t have league or cup games on the horizon are back in training.

But Hinshelwood felt it was important to get them together – as much for the social and mental health side of players’ wellbeing as anything.

“That goes for us as coaches as well as the players.

“Everyone wants to be be part of a team again and enjoy the spirit and morale that goes with it,” he added.

They’ll train again tonight and may have an in-house match on Saturday.

It’s all part of a clearly defined plan to get the squad ready for a new Isthman premier promotion bid when the 21-22 season starts.
