Wickers and Golds share the points

Turrell netted three minutes from time to haul Wickers level and grab a point after a dominant second-half showing from Golds on their home turf.

Jordan Saunders had given Wickers the lead just before the half-hour mark after he chipped the ball over a defender and drilled home and that was how it stayed at half-time.

Golds equalised on 60 minutes starting a dominant spell as Jamie Atterwell headed home a cross, before they had the chance to go ahead from the penalty spot moments later.

Dave Gaskin was taken out as he was about to shoot, but Mitchell Hand’s penalty was saved by Callum Fidler.

Despite this the home side kept up the pressure and Gaskin put them ahead on 65 minutes, before Danny Hand and Michael Hendrick both went close to extending their lead.

Wickers, however, were to have the final say as Turrell popped up in the closing stages to smash home the equaliser with and unstoppable shot from just outside the area after he took the ball down from a corner.

That was the final action and enough to pinch the visitors a point to help in their quest to seal a sixth-place finish.

Golds manager Mark Bennett was extremely disappointed by his sides’ showing and said he’d consider changes ahead of the weekend’s game at home to Steyning.

He said: “I wasn’t happy with a point at all, it was definitely two dropped.

“In the first half we didn’t play well at all and the few chances we did have we didn’t take as we normally would, so they went in 1-0 up at half-time.

“I had a bit of a go at half-time and we came out better, but not great.

“We knew they aren’t a bad side, they are just below us in the league and we have played them twice so we knew what to expect, but no we didn’t play to that.

“In the first half we looked like we hadn’t played for two months let alone two weeks, but that is no excuse as everyone is in the same boat.

“I was disappointed and I told them so, they’ll be changes at the weekend if people aren’t going to put the effort in.”

Wickers boss Lloyd Saunders said: “Overall 2-2 was a fair result. They started strongly for the first 10 or 15 minutes and then Jordan put us ahead and we saw out the half pretty comfortably.

“We know they are a good side and we said at half-time they would come back at us and they did.

“Alain (Multini) did very well and caused them allsorts of problems and it was a good debut from Lewis Finney, he looked very lively out wide.

“I managed to get Sam (Blundell) on for a bit to get him some more minutes and defensively we were very good.”

Both managers, however, didn’t have much praise for the referee’s performance with Saunders labelling it “embarrassing”.

He added: “It was the worst performance I have ever seen, he couldn’t keep up with play and kept giving wrong decisions and that wound the players up. It was just embarrassing to watch.

“I was happy to get away with a point and as far away from the referee as I could.”
