Wick sink Steyning with two first-half goals

GOALS from Scott Towers and Luca Coleman-Carr gave Wick Football Club a 2-0 victory at Steyning Town on Wednesday (August 17) and their first win of the season.

The away side had the perfect start in the County League Division 2 match when Coleman-Carr whipped in a ball from the left-hand side that was met on the half-volley by Scott Towers after just 20 seconds, reports James Hilsum.

The second was a sweet strike from a 25-yard free kick by Coleman-Carr that squirmed through the hands of Steyning keeper Mike Abbott.

Steyning rallied after the break and had a good opportunity to halve the arrears when Lewis Levoi blasted just wide following good work from Ben Shelford.

And they went close again late on when substitute Jack Goatcher and Shelford both had shots blocked in quick succession.

Wick manager Richard Towers said: “We perfomed a lot better than we did against Oakwood on Saturday and passed the ball around well.”

The only disappointment for Towers was that they could not add to their first-half strikes, and he said they took their “foot off the gas” after the interval.

Steyning assistant boss Tom Gurney said: “It was very disappointing because our second half display was really good. We played with intensity, we passed the ball and we should have scored. It was very encouraging but by that time it was too late.

“We took too long to get going and paid the price which is what happens at this level of football. We need to make sure we are focused from the first whistle but we will learn from this and take it into the next game.”
