STEYNING Town Football Club’s winless run in County League Division 2 came to an end on Saturday.
Town had suffered seven defeats and picked up just two draws in their previous nine league matches, before a home triumph against Haywards Heath.
It was Steyning’s first victory since a 2-1 win at Rustington in December and boss John Suter was delighted to finally secure a much-needed success.
He said: “We deserved the victory on Saturday.
“I felt we were the better side and it was a welcome three points.
“When you have gone as many games as we have without winning, it makes you appreciate it that much more. There was a great feeling around the place after the game.”
The opening half-hour provided little entertainment, with the driving wind and rain making it difficult for both sides.
Town came to life on 30 minutes, though, and should have gone ahead when Lewis Levoi played in Kris Harding but his effort hit a post.
Harding was again involved a minute later when he had the ball in the back of the net, only to see his strike ruled out for offside.
In what was proving to be a lively end to the half, Heath could have gone in front but Lewis Westgate headed just over, while Levoi, Harding and Chad Milner all spurned opportunities to put Town a goal ahead.
The home side felt they should have been awarded a penalty 13 minutes after the break when Milner went down but the referee waved play on.
Town’s dominance was finally rewarded three minutes later, though, as Harding’s half-volley found the top corner.
It was 2-0 just three minutes later when Matt Dodd got the final touch following a goalmouth scramble.
Town keeper Aaron Jeal pulled off a fine stop to deny Darren Annis ten minutes from time and Steyning then broke away and made sure of all three points as Dodd squared for Levoi to score.
Philip Gault netted a consolation for the visitors with six minutes left, before Dodd bagged his second a minute from the end.
Town travel to AFC Uckfield on Saturday, before they host local rivals Storrington on Tuesday (7.45pm).
STEYNING: Jeal; Hare, Pickup, Finch, Parsons; Dodd, Early, Boxall, Harding; Levoi, Chad Milner. Subs: Curt Milner (Chad Milner), Clark (Harding), Gritt (Pickup).
