Ten goals in two games show Wickers mean business
The Wickers are back – and meaning business.
Southwick resumed their Mid Sussex League Championship season clearly intent on winning the division and gaining promotion.
In two home games over the Easter weekend, they put a total of ten goals past Ridgewood and Reigate Priory.
In Saturday’s 5-0 win against Ridgewood, Azza Watson, Jordon Groom (2), Rossy Myers and Tommy Johnston were all on target. Wickers were a little rusty early on after the three-month break but started to grow into the game.
They went in 1-0 up at half-time with a Johnston goal. It should have been 2-0 but Myers’ penalty brought a good save from the keeper, who had a fine game between the sticks.
In the second the Wickers found there feet and played some lovely football.
They broke down Ridgewood with some patient build-up and Groom tucked away two penalties while Watson got on the scoresheet and a well-worked goal by Myers rounded off the scoring.
It was a similar story when Reigate Priory visited on Monday. Watson, Myers, Groom, Cam Wiltshire and Johnston scored to earn another 5-0 success. The Wickers displayed some brilliant, patient play by the back four and the midfield three.
Early goals from Watson, Wiltshire and Johnston made it 3-0 within 25 minutes. The pace of the game dropped off a little with the opposition still working hard to keep Southwick at bay.
In the second half, Wickers were again showing their true quality, passing the ball around nicely.
Wiltshire, Myers and combined to cause trouble down the flanks. Wickers were dictating the pace of the game, the back four and midfielder Austin controlling things.
The fourth goal came with penalty specialist Groom stepping up and hitting the back of the net with his third goal of the weekend.
The final goal was the best with nearly every player touching the ball before it fell to Watson, who again showed quick feet to line the ball up for Myers to tap home and make it 5-0.
Southwick sit top of the Championship’s top-half mini league and host Holland Sports at Southwick Rec on Saturday (2pm).
