In front of a crowd of 102, Iain Jarvie and debutant Barney Boutwood netted in the second half to ensure Swans took all three points and moved back up to second in the Southern Combination League Division 1 table.

For Town, who were playing for the first time since December 12, it was a second successive defeat after they had lost 3-1 to Haywards Heath in their previous game.

The first half provided little goalmouth action, with neither goalkeeper tested too frequently.

Swans kicked on in the second period and caused Town’s backline all sorts of problems. Despite that pressure, the home side had to wait until the 65th minute to open the scoring through Jarvie.

Boutwood then came off the bench to double Swans’ lead on his debut 14 minutes from time. The former Arundel forward signed earlier in the week and had netted the winner for Mullets – against Storrington – in the Sussex Senior Cup in October.

Swans boss Peter Matthews was pleased with the victory and said: “I was delighted to beat our local rivals in Steyning.

“I felt the first half was very even but we just edged the second.

“Barney Boutwood, who signed for us earlier this week, came on as sub and scored with his first touch.

“He is a proven goalscorer and he will definitely add something to the squad I have here.

“I have been very pleased with how the season has gone so far but, at times, we have been a little inconsistent.”

Town boss Alan Skipper said: “It was a really disappointing result for us.

“The defeat was not down to a lack of commitment but just down to misssed opportunities. We spoke at the break to make sure those misses did not cost us. However, in the end, they did.

“Storrington are a hard-working side and we knew what we were going to come up against. In the end, they just ground the result out.

“I feel I must take responsibilty for our lack of league form.

“I have focused on the amazing cup runs that we have had this campaign.

“So I will have a look at myself, chat with the management team and ensure that we get it right in the league as well.

“I am confident we have the squad to push on in the league. With that said, we need a goalscorer to add to the team but the search goes on at the minute.”
