WORTHING Football Club boss Adam Hinshelwood is delighted to have striker Ben Pope on board for the upcoming Ryman League South Division season.

Pope, who had trials with Cambridge, Stoke and Norwich last season, has signed a one-year deal but Hinshelwood insists Rebels will not stand in the young striker’s way if a professional club come calling.

Hinshelwood said: “I’m very pleased that Ben has signed but it was something that we didn’t want to push on him.

“He was a bit reluctant in case it scuppered his chances of getting a pro deal but, as a club, we wouldn’t stand in anyone’s way who wants to progress into league football.

“We wouldn’t command a ridiculous fee – it just gives us a little bit of leeway in terms of asking for a pre-season friendly or seeing if we can get players on loan if anything does happen.”

With Omar Bugiel, Harvey Sparks, Will Hendon, Jack Fagan and Lloyd Dawes already committed to next season, Hinshelwood said: “Ben is another great addition for next season and another good, young player secured to the club.

“He’s showed some loyalty to us as other clubs had shown an interest in him but he wanted to stay as he enjoys himself here and feels he is improving.”
