Steyning set sights on FA Vase upset

Town host Southern Combination League Premier Division high-flyers Hornets in what will be their first appearance in the first round proper for 12 years.

Craig Knowles bagged the only goal as Steyning saw off Rochester United to progress through the second qualfiying round, after a 6-2 victory over Wick & Barnham United in the previous round.

However, Skipper knows the size of the task that his side will face against one of the Premier Division title favourites.

He said: “To be honest, first and foremost, I will be looking for the right performance from the lads. If a good performance is put in on the day, then we will see where that takes us.

“Horsham are a formidable opponent and respect will be given to them but we won’t be there to make up the numbers.

“The occasion has to help the players. At this level, this is the type of game the players must be looking forward to.

“Hopefully, with a bumper crowd on the day, it will be something we can savour.”

Town are no strangers to facing division-higher opponents as they met Premier Division leaders Newhaven in the Peter Bentley Cup earlier this month, losing 2-1.

Skipper is hoping his side can take some inspiration from that showing and said: “It is going to be a great occasion for the club and there is some hard work, so thank-you to the committee and helpers.

“If we can put in a performance like we did at Newhaven recently, who knows what might happen.”

Horsham boss Dominic Di Paola said: “A lot of their players played for us at East Preston. Lee Garnham, Ash Finch, Matt Dodd, Ash Trowler and Ben Rose, there are a few down there, so it is going to be a decent game.

“Everyone will have to be on it as it can almost be a giant- killing for them. They are a good side and will be up for it, it is just as good an opportunity for them to go through.”

Saturday’s game kicks-off at 3pm at The Shooting Field. If the game is drawn, the replay will take place next midweek.
