SHOREHAM Football Club suffered a third defeat in four County League Division 1 matches away to struggling Hassocks on Saturday.
A Ryan Collins strike on 16 minutes and a goal from Nick Pitcher 20 minutes from time meant Mussels fell to defeat.
After a 5-1 win over Crawley Down Gatwick the previous week, Mussels went into the game with confidence but chairman Stuart Slaney felt his side lacked focus and got what they deserved from the contest.
He said: “Hassocks deserved the win as we weren’t focused and on our game.
“Hassocks just simply wanted it a little more than we did.
“That may have been down to the fact that Hassocks have a new manager and the players wanted to prove their positions.
“It also seemed that some of my players were already in holiday mode and were thinking about the Christmas break, which should not have been the case as this was our last game of the year.
“I am planning some changes in the new year, with a couple of new signings and a strict strategy for the final part of the season set to be installed, as we look to improve our form.”
Mussels started the match the better of the two sides but they fell behind on 16 minutes when a Collins strike took a wicked deflection and looped into the top corner.
Shoreham had a number of chances in the first period and would have gone in level at half-time had it not been for the post and crossbar coming to the home side’s rescue.
Mussels felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Ross Myers went down in the penalty area but the referee waved play on.
Hassocks were then awarded a penalty of their own on 70 minutes and Pitcher made no mistake to put his side two goals ahead.
Shoreham remain sixth from bottom in the table, while the win moved Hassocks out of the bottom three.
The fixture was Shoreham’s last of 2014. They return to action on January 3, with a home match against St Francis Rangers.
