Seagulls’ weekend odds - Charlton

Brighton were left to rue the early dismissal of defender Lewis Dunk as they crashed 3-0 at rivals Crystal Palace last weekend as former striker Glen Murray came back to haunt his former employers in a day to forget.

This reverse left Albion eighth in the table, nine points behind leaders Cardiff and BetVictor offer 16/1 for Seagulls to win the title, 5/1 to gain promotion and 6/4 to finish in the top six.

They are all 7/4 that Albion finish higher than rivals Palace (2/5) who currently sit second in the table, but will their bubble burst in the second half of the season?

There is talk of possible January suitors for Wilfried Zaha and Murray and the 7/4 could look very big come the spring.

Seagulls return to London this weekend to play Chris Powell’s improving Charlton outfit, who, despite being outplayed for large periods, held form team Millwall to a goalless draw last time out and are beginning to move clear of the relegation zone.

The Addicks find themselves only three points behind Brighton knowing only goal difference will prevent them moving ahead of Albion if they record three points at the Valley.

Gus Poyet’s side are favourites at 8/5, with the draw 12/5, and a home success 15/8. The hosts recorded an amazing 5-4 victory over leaders Cardiff in early November and beat lowly Peterborough 2-0 in their last home game.

Charlton don’t have a prolific goalscorer, however, with Ricardo Fuller (three) and the excellent Johnnie Jackson (four) leading their scoring charts. The pair are 13/2 and 9/1 respectively to score first at the Valley.

No change in the Brighton top scorer market after a blank at Selhurst Park, so Craig Mackail-Smith remains a strong favourite at 1/6 - the Scottish international is seen as the most likely to open scoring at Charlton at 5/1, with Ashley Barnes 13/2.

Albion received an exciting home tie when the FA Cup draw was announced on Sunday and Premier League outfit Newcastle United will certainly know they have been in a game when they visit in early January.

Albion are 150/1 to lift the trophy with Newcastle an industry top price 33/1.
