Rebels told to be more clinical after Folkestone defeat

WORTHING Football Club assistant manager Jon Meeney said his side have to be more clinical at both ends of the pitch after Saturday’s defeat 3-1 at high-flying Folkestone Invicta.

Rebels had several openings with the wind behind them in the first half but went into the break level at 0-0.

Folkestone went ahead ten minutes into the second half, shortly after Rebels’ George Gaskin had an effort ruled out for offside, when Nat Blanks headed home Dane Luchford’s free kick.

Johan Ter Horst doubled the lead eight minutes later, before Rebels got a goal back from the penalty spot on 70 minutes.

Will Hendon advanced down the right and found Omar Bugiel, who was brought down in the penalty area, and Mark Knee scored from the spot.

Ter Horst’s second restored Folkestone’s two-goal lead on 79 minutes, before Rebels had defender Connor Cody sent off late on when he fouled Paul Booth, who was through on goal.

Meeney said: “We just need to be a bit more clinical and ruthless when we get chances and we’ve got to be more clinical and ruthless in defence as well.

“We got in good areas in the first half and had some good chances and not taking them came back to hurt us.

“When we got it back to 2-1, I thought we could go on and get something but we just didn’t have that clinical edge.

“It was frustrating but we won’t get too downbeat. The players here are all good enough and are only going to progress. It’s all a learning curve but we’ve just got to be that bit more ruthless and clinical.”

The game was just one of two in the division to go ahead on Saturday. The other match saw Guernsey win 4-2 at home to Eastbourne Town.

Rebels entertain Walton Casuals on Saturday and then travel to Herne Bay on Tuesday evening.
