Poor start is costly for Lancing

LANCING Football Club joint manager Martin Gander bemoaned his side’s poor start as they crashed 3-0 at Redhill on Saturday.

Under-strength Lancers were 2-0 down inside nine minutes, through goals from Charlie Farmer and Alexander Scott.

From then on, Lancing dominated the game and could have gone in at half-time at least level.

Danny Gainsford hit the bar with a header, Sam O’Regan had an effort cleared off the line, Darren Boswell was denied by a good save and Jack Hayward thumped the post.

Lancers were not able to find the net, though, and their day got worse when Titus Paterson was dismissed for violent conduct.

Gavin Gordon fired home Redhill’s third six minutes from time to send Lancers down a place to fourth.

Gander said: “We started the game with the wrong attitude and it was very disappointing, although we played okay after that and should have gone in level or even ahead.

“We had too much to do from then on, we were a bit light without Shaheen Sadough, Lee Denyer, Dan McLoughlin and Dan Turner, although that’s no excuse.

“The scoreline flattered them, though. We’ve got a tough period of games over Christmas and we’re happy with fourth at this stage of the season.”

LANCING: Di Bernardo; Taylor, O’Regan, Gainsford, Sharman; Boswell, Hayward, Hunt; Martin, Paterson, Joseph. Subs: Annis (Joseph 70), Lunn (Hayward 74), Aslan (Boswell 80).

Lancers’ game at Ringmer on Tuesday evening was postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch.

Lancing are at Peacehaven on Saturday and then host Arundel on Tuesday.
