MILE OAK Football Club boss Anthony Whittington has set his side the challenge of a top-three finish and reaching a cup final as the season draws to a close.
Oak, who sit fifth in County League Division 2, will face leaders Worthing United in the Division 2 Cup semi-finals after the Mavericks won 1-0 at Saltdean in the replayed quarter-final on Saturday.
Whittington believes his team have what it takes to achieve both targets and said: “Before the season began, we all set ourselves a challenge of finishing in the top three and reaching a cup final.
“We now have nine games left and are still in with a shout of doing exactly what we set out to do.
“It’s not going to be easy but I believe the squad I have can achieve it.
“I think we will have to win all eight remaining league matches to get in the top three and we will have to beat arguably the best team in Worthing United to get to the cup final.
“It’s going to be an uphill task but we are still in with a shout on both fronts.”
Oak’s game at Westfield was postponed on Saturday owing to a waterlogged pitch.
They host Saltdean United on Saturday.
Whittington said: “It’s vital that we take maximum points from our matches now.
“We need to start that run against Saltdean and go from there.”
