MILE OAK Football Club got their Southern Combination League Division 1 campaign underway with a 3-2 victory last night.
Oak, who were without a game on Saturday, faced Selsey, who were relegated from the top division of the SCFL last season, at Chalky Road.
They kicked off in style and edged a five-goal thriller to give boss Anthony Whittington an opening-day success.
Whittington felt the result was the most important thing and hi side got that.
He said: “It’s been quite a difficult pre-season for us with a few players unavailable.
“We tested a new system last night and we had only managed to do minimal work on that in the pre-season.
“The most important thing for us was getting the three points and fortunately we managed to do that.”
Oak had to do it the hard way, though, as after leading twice in the clash they were pegged back on both occasions.
Danny Curd fired the home side ahead on 20 minutes but Callum Overton netted nine minutes later to make it 1-1.
Oak should have taken a lead into the interval as Adam Dine netted on 44 minutes. However, Selsey would peg the home side back once again as Overton bagged his second two minutes later.
Oak were not to be denied the win, though, and took all three points thanks to an Asa Turley-George strike four minutes from time.
MILE OAK: Stenning: Turley-George, Hall, Lansdale, Whiting; Wedge-Bull, Pulling, Maskell, Skinner; Curd, Dine. Subs: Watts, Gillingham, McDonald, Clarke, Arnold
