SHOREHAM Football Club will host Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-21 team next month as part of their pre-season preparation.
Mussels will entertain Albion’s young stars on July 25 at Middle Road, with a 3pm kick-off.
Shoreham boss Kane Louis, who spent eight years with Albion as a youngster from 2001 to 2008, including one season as a professional, admits it is an exciting game for the Southern Combination League club to have.
He said: “It’s really good for us to have Brighton coming down to our ground and it’s exciting for everyone at the club. Hopefully, a few people will come along to watch the game, which will bring in a bit of revenue for the club.”
On how the game came about, Louis said: “I knew it would be hard to get the first team down but I had thought about trying to get the under-21 team.
“However, before I had a chance, Derek Allan, who is Brighton’s secretary and the father of one of our players, Rob, had approached Stuart Slaney (Shoreham chairman) as they wanted to play a Sussex side in their pre-season programme.
“We said yes straight away and we’re all looking forward to it.
“I haven’t played against Brighton since I left them, so it will be a little bit strange but it’s exciting as well.”
Mussels begin pre-season training on Tuesday and their first friendly is against Southwick on July 11. They also have fixtures against Haywards Heath, Langney Wanderers and Burgess Hill and are waiting to confirm one more on August 1.
Louis is already looking forward to the new season and said: “You can’t sign anyone on yet but I’ve spoken to quite a few players who are going to be coming down for pre-season.
“There’s going to be competition for places next season and everyone is going to have to fight for their spot.
“Hopefully, that will help us to have a good season. I’d like to have a good cup run as it’s always exciting to get to a final and we also want to get through a few rounds in the FA Cup and FA Vase to bring some money in.”
Louis is also pleased to have an under-21 team set up at the club and said: “It’s brilliant. A lot of pro clubs now have it and we’ve got a lot of good young players here.”
