McBride back with a bang in late Whitstable win

RYAN McBRIDE returned with a bang on Tuesday night as the Worthing Football Club striker came off the bench on his return from suspension to hit a 90th-minute winner at Whitstable.

Having conceded an injury-time equaliser in their 1-1 draw at home against Whitehawk on Saturday it was Rebels’ turn to leave it late.

Worthing found themselves one down after 14 minutes, but Darren Budd levelled the score after the 30-minute mark with a thunderous effort.

John Lansdale then put Rebels ahead just before the break from the penalty spot after a handball, for his ninth goal of the season. Whitstable fought back after the break and levelled with eight minutes left as the referee over ruled an offside.

But substitute McBride drilled home a volley into the top corner just before the end of the 90.

White said: “It’s worked against us, people getting late goals so it was nice and good character from the lads. We didn’t start too well and they were on top, before we got the goals back. The second half was the same until they decided to throw everything at us and got a goal back – which was probably deserved.

“I started Ryan and Kenno (Paul Kennet) on the bench as the I felt the guys on Saturday were tremendous. But it was great to see Ryan come on and score and it was a fantastic finish.”
