LuaLua, who hit the winner in Brighton’s 1-0 Championship victory on Friday evening, struck two minutes into stoppage-time to send his side through at the expense of League One Southend United.

Brighton had an early penalty appeal waved away when Inigo Calderon’s shot appeared to strike Southend defender Cian Bolger on the arm.

Danny Holla’s free kick was then kept out by Shrimpers keeper Daniel Bentley at his near post, before the hosts’ David Worrell curled an effort wide of the Albion goal.

Southend’s Ryan Leonard headed wide after half-time, before LuaLua’s drilled cross was nearly turned into his own net by Southend’s Ben Coker.

Brighton’s debutant keeper Niki Maenpaa made a superb save to keep out Anthony Wordsworth’s 25-yarder, before LuaLua latched on to Holla’s through ball deep into injury-time and coolly slotted home the winner.

The draw for the second round takes place tomorrow evening, following Doncaster’s first-round tie with Leeds.
