The game looked to be heading for extra-time when Shepherd curled the ball over the wall and in at the near post from 20 yards.

Lancers manager Richard Whittington said: “It was a great free kick by Dom and it was just what we deserved. We played some great football at times, created so many chances and we could have won by a lot more. We have not been getting the breaks lately and I’m hoping this is when our luck changes.

“We have got a good squad here, we just need to show some consistency and confidence and get a run going and we will be a very good side.”

Midfielders Ollie Davis and Charlie Romain returned to the side and more than justified their selection after capping impressive displays with goals.

Davis put Lancing back on level terms moments after Tom Tolfrey had put Dorking ahead early in the second half. He brought the ball down on the penalty spot, swivelled and slotted a low shot past the keeper. Romain put Lancers ahead just past the hour when he smashed home a half-cleared cross with a superb volley

Wanderers hit back with eight minutes to go when Merrick Lewis bundled the ball in from a corner, but the last say was left to Shepherd to seal a place in the third round.
