The Dockers had gone down 4-0 at Lancers’ near neighbours Shoreham the previous week, whilst Richard Whittington’s side had made it four successes on the spin with their latest triumph a superb 4-2 victory at Pagham in the RUR Cup.

A repeat of that never looked likely here though, with Newhaven in control from the moment ex-Lancer Connor Sidwell put them ahead after just six minutes.

Lewis Finney had a third minute-goal ruled out, but the visitors went ahead when Lee Robinson and Brad Murray linked up and the former crossed for Sidwell, who played for Lancing at the start of last season, to head in from close range.

Mike Williamson was fouled by Adam Kneller and although Finney’s initial spot-kick was saved by Jake Buss, the striker was on hand to knock home the loose ball on the rebound for his 14th goal of the campaign.

It was Dockers who restored their advantage on the stroke of half-time when the home defence was caught napping and Connor stole in to score.

Lancers never really recovered from then on and Kneller extended his side’s advantage when his free-kick found a way through Lancers poorly assembled wall and into the bottom corner on the hour mark.

Lancing manager Whittington said: “It’s a dissapointing result given that we have been on a good run and we should winning these games against sides similar to ourselves.

“I don’t think we played badly, we did concede two very soft goals, the second in particular but even with ten men we kept creating chances and kept going forward.

“The result is dissapointing but I’m quite pleased with the performance as we played nice stuff and, like I say, kept going to the end even at 3-1 and a man down.

“We will pick ourselves up and now have three games in a week ahead of a busy schedule of fixtures ahead.”
