Lancers chairman Martin Gander received a phone call from the County League on Tuesday morning to inform him of the club’s reprieve.

Lancing were deducted six points for fielding an ineligible player during the 2013-14 season as they finished three points behind fourth-from-bottom Selsey.

Gander said: “We finished in the bottom three and in a relegation place and I was saying at the Sussex Senior Cup final on Sunday that, as far as I was aware, we were relegated.

“However, I got a phone call on Tuesday to say we’ve been reprieved and now we’ll start to plan for Division 1 again.

“A lot of other teams have been given reprieves in the past and I can’t remember the last time that three teams went down from Division 1.

“It’s great news for the club and we’re all really happy about it.”

Only Worthing United will be relegated into Division 2 as Rye, who finished second-from-bottom, folded during the season.

Eastbourne United, Loxwood and Broadbridge Heath will all be promoted from Division 2, and Crawley Down Gatwick and Eastbourne Town come down from the Ryman League South Division, which East Grinstead go up into.
