The only goal of the County League Division 1 match came on 41 minutes when James Wotherspoon supplied a neat finish from man-of-the-match Owen Callaghan’s cross.

Lancers had chances to extend their lead in the second half as Wotherspoon, with a volley, and Will Conway, with a free kick, both hit the bar and Callaghan was denied by an excellent save.

Lancing assistant manager Tom Gurney said: “We were brilliant and it was our best performance of the season.

Chichester are quite a good team but we controlled the game from start to finish.

“I don’t think they had a proper chance in the whole game. All the time you don’t get a second, it only takes a goal from a set-piece or something for the opposition to equalise but we never really looked in danger.”

Lancing travel to Rye on Saturday.

LANCING: Shaw; Mills, Fenton, Davis, J.Spinks; A.Spinks, Conway, Bant, Callaghan; Waterman, Wotherspoon. Subs: Shepherd (Wotherspoon 70), Melia (Callaghan 75), Joseph (A.Spinks 85), Sharman, Ford.
