Harrison gets first England call-up

The 19-year-old, from Worthing, is a professional at Southampton and has made five appearances for the first team this season, including a Premier League appearance against Manchester City.

He could make his international debut in the friendly with Turkey on Wednesday evening. The match is in Chester, with a 7pm kick-off, and he meets up with the squad on Saturday.

Reed played locally for Worthing Rebels and Worthing Minors, before joining Southampton. On his call-up to the England squad, Reed, speaking to Saints’ website, said: “I’m obviously delighted. It’s going to be a great experience, so I really can’t wait for it. To put on an England shirt would be a dream come true.”

Harrison’s mother, Julia, said: “For over 10 years he has been totally dedicated and determined to be a success at the one thing he loves most of all, and that is his football.

“The whole family is so elated at the news this week that he has got into the England squad. This must be the ultimate accolade in recognition of the effort he has put in.”

Reed, who attended Laurels First School, the Orchards Middle School and then Durrington High School, has been delighted with how his season has gone with Southampton.

He said: “If I look at where I was at the start of last season, I could only have dreamed of this.

“I can’t thank the gaffer and the coaching staff enough for the trust they’ve put in me. It’s helped my confidence in the games I’ve come on in, and I’m happy with how I’ve done. I’m really pleased.

“I’m delighted with the way the season has gone, and I’m hoping to kick on in the last few months of the campaign.”
